Where it all began

After 20 years of no contact, an old friend Rolo who nick lived with at art college, reached out to Nick Elphick in 2022, unaware of the connection he was about to make. In his London studio, this friend was renting space to someone named Sally Jones, not realizing she was the daughter of Terry Jones.

One day, in a conversation about restoration shows, Rolo said I have a friend nick Elphick in salvage hunters the restaurant show Sally was shocked as she Recognised Nick from TV, expressing that she liked his work. That led to Sally revealing that she was considering a portrait of her father, Terry Jones, who had passed away a few years prior. But then she mentioned the Colwyn Bay Theatre was also planning a statue of Terry.

Nick was stunned, Terry Jones, a personal hero, was someone he’d have the opportunity to honour. Over the next year, Nick created sketches and ideas to help Sally with fundraising. Initially sceptical about raising the money, Nick was amazed when the funds came together in just six months.

For Nick, the entire journey felt destined, especially as it also connected to a brain charity, resonating with his personal experience of his father’s illness. In the end, it all felt like it was meant to be.

Terry Jones, A Python on the Prom Exhibition, RCA

As you stand within the Terry Jones exhibition at the Royal Cambrian Academy, you are taken on a journey through Nick Elphick’s creative process. You’ll first see the early research of props and exploratory sculptures, revealing the initial ideas that sparked the project. Some of these are sculpted heads of Terry Jones that didn’t make it to the final piece, showing the trial-and-error of capturing his essence.

As you move through the space, you’ll encounter a maquette of Terry’s head, a refined study that distils his character. Finally, you’ll see a miniature of the entire statue, a scaled model of the final public sculpture.

Together, these pieces allow you to trace the entire evolution of the project, from concept to reality, all completed in Nick Elphick Studios Llandudno.
