JOHN BAUM

ELECTED IN 1973

John Baum attended the Slade School of Art, taught at Liverpool Polytechnic from 1965-1989, and was Head of Art and Design at Coleg Menai, Gwynedd, until 1994.

His works are in the permanent collections of the National Library of Wales, many Welsh museums, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and in private collections internationally. He has exhibited at the Tate Liverpool, Oriel Mon, and galleries in London, Liverpool and North Wales.

"The paintings are a juxtaposition of familiar objects and human figures at an instant in time and at a particular place. The locations are invariably western coastal seen from a particular geographical direction. They are of an abstract composition where the mood is set by the inherent light and colour. Designed to generate a particular atmosphere, they are meticulously structured and measured to achieve a well balanced image. The aim is that they become a monumental and profound statement about the ordinariness of things."
