LYNNE CARTLIDGE

ELECTED IN 2017

I live and work in Wales, where I have maintained my studio practice for nearly forty years alongside raising my son and a period teaching. I grew up in Cornwall and graduated in Fine Art from Cardiff College of Art in 1987.

I am mostly known for my still life and flower paintings, working primarily in oil. My practice centres on capturing light, form, and space through close observation of domestic setups and natural subjects.

While my traditional practice relies entirely on working directly from life, I have more recently taught myself to develop paintings from gathered motifs. This came about by necessity when I became inspired by window views of the sea in Cornwall and needed to continue them at home in the studio. I then experimented with adding windowscapes to still lifes to deepen the emotive message, which has developed into a broader method of picture-making. Lately, I have also started using gouache as a more immediate approach often away from the studio.

Translating these collected memories into paint allows me to explore a different working process. Ultimately, my approach aims for a balance between an overarching sense of stillness and an underlying emotional turbulence, constructing a quiet, psychological space shaped by mood, place, and memory.
