ELECTED IN 2010
Stephen West, originally from Reading in Berkshire, has lived in Wales for nearly 40 years.
He married fellow
student Shani Rhys James while at St Martins School of Art
and they set up studios
in Mid-Wales in the 80s. Stephen works across different media in painting, drawing
and sculpture. His work tends to include the natural world – for
example a recent series of
large drawings of trees initiated by recording ash trees – but also
a mix of interior and
exterior scenes dealing with the inside and outside simultaneously.
They give glimpses of
contemporary life in a rural setting. He often includes birds,
animals, people, furniture,
architecture and nature in his large scale assembled drawings,
sometimes in a confusion or chaos
and sometimes more lyrically.
He has exhibited widely across Wales and in National Eisteddfodau as well as UK art competitions and has work in the collections of Oriel Môn Llangefni and Tabernacle Collection in Machynlleth.
