SCULPTURAL FELTING WITH DEANNE DODDINGTON MIZEN RCA

In this two-day workshop we will explore how to sculpt the face out of felt using natural wool and needle felting.

All materials will be provided, and no experience is necessary.

Friday 8th and Saturday 9th November 2024 | 11am-4pm | Fee £140 | Booking is essential

What is needle felting?

It is the process of transforming wool into a solid 3D felted object using a special barbed needle which allows the fibres of the wool to tightly knit together. It is a fun and relaxing process, but it does take concentration as the needles are very sharp!

Workshop Schedule - Day 1

Arrive and register

Intro to felting and Deanne’s work

11:30am

Get to know the group. Discussion about experience and aspirations

11:45am

Create a pre-felt square and wet felted head template using a resist for use the following day

13:00 - 13:45pm

Lunch - Please feel free to bring a packed lunch and drinks or pop into Conwy for food

Understanding the head and proportions. Basics of sculptural needle felting. How to break down the face into simple shapes for felting purposes

Finish and gather for review

Arrive and settle in

Review of previous day and prepare the head template for needle felting

11:30am

Construction of the face, concentrating on nose, mouth and eyes using needle felting.

13:45pm

Construction of ears and how to shape the head. How to blend and contour around features. Smoothing and finishing techniques

15:30pm

Finish and gather for review

About Deanne Doddington Mizen RCA

Based in Bethesda, North Wales, Deanne has been a professional artist since 2006, following the completion of her Fine Art degree at De Montfort University. Her works are held in private collections across the UK and abroad and she exhibits regularly throughout Wales.

Deanne’s practice explores ways of making art using environmentally sustainable, locally sourced materials and processes. Her sculptures are created using natural and reclaimed materials such as stone, wood, beeswax, and wool.
