Traditional gesso and egg tempera painting workshop

A hands-on workshop exploring how to make traditional gesso from rabbit skin glue and whiting. Participants will learn how to mix up and apply layers of gesso to pre-prepared boards. We will then learn how to make and use egg tempera paint and use a pre-prepared board to explore how to use egg tempera. Both processes are slow, methodical and meditative - a perfect way to slow down in the studio and focus fully on the alchemy of making both surface and paint! This workshop is suitable for ages 15 and above.

Participants will learn practical skills and how gesso and egg tempera paint have been used in Art throughout history and within more contemporary artwork. We will also learn about good and safe studio practice when using these materials.

All materials included along with expert tutoring from experienced artist and RCA member Carys Wilson.

Suitable for beginners and those with experience.

Carys has run numerous workshops surrounding traditional gesso making and egg tempera paint, alongside other workshops focussing on drawing skills and development, group and one-to-one mentoring - most recently at StudioKIND in Barnstaple (Devon), Penlee House and Gallery in Penzance (Cornwall), Falmouth Art Gallery (Cornwall) and numerous school and youth workshops.

Carys has over 25 years of experience of running workshops in a variety of establishments.
