Monotype printing workshop with Ruth Thomas RCA
"Many people use this technique as a simple line drawing – and I will demonstrate this, as it is effective – but I think it really works well when the image is built up in layers of different colours, producing a print which has almost the quality of a soft coloured pencil drawing. Accidental textures occur that contribute to the image.
Briefly, ink is rolled out thinly onto Perspex or glass. A piece of paper is laid over the rolled out ink. A drawing is made on the back of the paper, transferring the ink from the Perspex onto the paper.
I will cover:
Subject matter – bold, simple forms are better.
Different types of paper – textured/smooth/thin/thick.
How to protect the borders of the printing paper.
Whether to work directly on the back of the paper or place an additional piece of newsprint over, to keep the printing paper clean.
How to mix and roll out the ink (including types of roller and ink).
How to create the monotype drawing without unintentionally covering the whole print!
Different tools to draw with – pencil, biro, etc."

Needle Felting a Hares Head with Rosemary Sharman
For beginners and intermediaries or everyone who likes to felt
"A lovely time spent learning how to needle felt a hares head from my floating studio, somewhere on a canal or river in Wales or England.
I shall run through how to draw out a simple way to create the head of an animal, that, in this case, can be adapted for a Hare's head. This will be something that you can then work to for scale and sizing. There is no need to be able to draw! Trust me!
A short introduction to the “Felting Needle “ and how it works and, importantly how to use it safely, and efficiently.
The whole process from the very start to finish of shaping the head and ears in various stages of completion with needle felting plus sewing in the eyes (or glue if preferred) Including some shortcuts/tips, where it is possible.
Ending with suggestions for finishing the hares head off with a collar, ruff, ribbon, jewellery, frames or stands.
I am sure this will be a very inspiring introduction to how beautiful things can be made quite easily with the very natural, and sustainable material of wool. Any medium grade wool. Such as Corriedale or (Laughton ) Manx Wool. In browns: 200 grams and the cream: 100 grams. ( All under £3.00 per 100 grams World of Wool) A small 25 grams of Very dark brown Or black wool. This can be Merino. Or any finer or medium wools.
• A “filler” of undyed wool to create the body with. I would say 200 grams. Or a ball of wool or wool mix. ( any oddments will suffice) The felting needle; A few fine “single barbed “ needles (This is a good all-rounder).
• I would strongly recommend a few of these needles as breakages do occur, especially as a beginner.
• ( Unfortunately, though many companies colour code their needles, this is not a universal colour coding system. i.e Pink topped for a certain barbed needle will be totally different elsewhere ...and dependent upon changes with who supplies the retailer too) Just on safety ..... It is advisable to purchase a needle felting finger protector. ( I do not wear one through my own choice) Otherwise have a few plasters at hand!
• Sizes of 10,12 mm and also 14 mm Animal eyes ( glass does give a better finish) Try to purchase the eyes that allow them to be sewn in. If not glueing is fine. ( Gorilla glue for fabrics and glass is good) I have suggested three varying sizes as this will enable slight differences in personal sizing of the completed hares head."
