What to do before the class
To make full use of the given time to learn about creating repeat designs and cutting & printing lino, you'll need to do a little preparatory work prior to Ann's masterclass.
Please bring a sketch/design which fits within a 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm square, which is 'hand-sized' and easy to repeatedly ink up and press onto the
Mulberry paper.
The design mustn’t touch the edges as this will stop the design from repeating seamlessly.
The sketch/design can be any subject you wish (motif, symbol or a ‘pattern’) but please try to think in solid areas of tone, rather than a line drawing, as this lends itself better to a repeating design. The example above happens to be a symmetrical design but it doesn’t need to be.
What to expect from the workshop
You’ll be shown how to adapt your sketch, quarter it to create a seamless design (see below) and transfer it to a 12cm x 12cm square of lino. Then you'll repeat-print your lino block on mulberry paper (which will be provided), to create your own unique wrapping paper/book cover etc.
Please feel free to bring any other papers which you want to experiment with printing on i.e. tissue paper, brown paper, sugar paper, etc.
Below is a visual summary of how to ‘quarter’ a sketch to creates a seamless, repeating design. We will do this on the day – you don’t need to do this in advance.
