Together with Roman you will create a still life in oil. You will receive guidance through every stage, from initial sketch to final rendering. You will learn the basic principles of composition, alla prima technique and experiment with texture and colour. The aim will be to paint a portrait during the day that will prepare you to try on your own at home.
Workshop outline:
- Introduction
- Demonstration: Roman will demonstrate the techniques and explain his creative process. You will learn the basic principles of composition, alla prima technique and experiment with texture and colour. Alla prima (Italian, meaning at first attempt) is a technique in which layers of wet painting are applied to previous layers of wet paint, in a fast way of working.
- Hands-on practice: the participants work on their own projects using the demonstrating techniques, with one-on-one guidance and feedback from Roman and encouragement to experiment
- Break for lunch
- More Hands-On-Practice and Critique Session: group critique with constructive feedback, discussion on improvements, and sharing of tips and tricks for refining techniques
- Q&A and Discussion with insights into the artist’s career and personal experiences
- Closing Remarks: summary of key takeaway from the workshop
Who Can Attend?
- No Previous Experience Required: Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, this workshop welcomes everyone. It would be an advantage if you have used/experimented with oils before, but not essential.
What do you need to bring?
- A Medium-sized canvas or primed cardboard for oil painting (16x20 inches / 40x50 cm)
- A simple set of oil paints: titanium white, ivory black, burnt umber, ultramarine blue, crimson red, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, yellow ochre, sap green (olive green)
- Brushes (for oil medium)
- Oil painting medium
- Palette
- Palette knife
Easels and a selection of oil paints will be provided.
Note: It will be possible to clean the brushes after the lesson.
About the artist:
Roman Nedopaka is a professional painter from Ukraine. He studied easel painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv. He held many exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad. Due to the war in Ukraine, he and his family are living and working in Wales.
