The Makers Guild in Wales has long been interested in staging an exhibition of printmaking. MGW members Marian Haf and Ruth Thomas were invited to curate an exhibition of printmaking and to take part themselves.

Contemporary Original Prints of Birds and Other Winged Creatures

A collaboration between the Royal Cambrian Academy and the Makers Guild in Wales, Cardiff.
MGW members Marian Haf and Ruth Thomas RCA were invited to curate an exhibition of printmaking and to take part themselves; this exhibition was first held in Cardiff in 2023.
Consideration was given to the theme and as Marian and Ruth currently produce original prints based on birds and other animals, it was decided this would be a good starting point for an exhibition. Eventually the team settled on the theme of flight, to include a variety of birds and flying insects. By looking at printmakers they each admired, carrying out additional research, Marian and Ruth came to a shortlist of printmakers based on the quality of the work and breadth of techniques. They wanted the exhibition to showcase printmaking in all its glory and to convey to the viewing
public the diversity of approaches within this medium. The final selection of eight printmakers means that the following print processes are represented in the exhibition: etching, drypoint, linocut, collagraph, wood engraving, woodcut and mezzotint. Most of the artists have made new prints specifically for the exhibition, to show alongside some of their existing work. The printmakers in the exhibition demonstrate a concern with the worrying trend of habitat loss and decline in biodiversity, but also an appreciation of the natural world, and in particular, the wonderful world of winged creatures.
