The wild extremities and elemental energies to which I am drawn are intrinsic to my fine-art practice. Mae’r eithafion gwyllt a’r egni elfennol sy’n fy nenu yn greiddiol i’m mynegiant o gelfyddyd gain.
Karina was born in Derbyshire in 1981 and studied Illustration at Glyndŵr University. She lives in Snowdonia and paints the surrounding landscape, citing Anglesey and the Llŷn Peninsula in north Wales as her main sources of inspiration.
"My intention as a painter is to create movement and to capture ephemeral light within a painting. I lay areas of opacity upon translucidus remnants of expression; layers of tone, loose brushwork and line, help me to build the desired sensory climate. Working initially en plein air, responding to transitory elements, in juxtaposition with the solidity of the geological, I further develop my thoughts and ideas in the studio, approaching larger-scale pieces through the medium of oil paint, pastel and charcoal.”
Cafodd Karina ei hyfforddiant ym Mhrifysgol Metropolitan Manceinion a Phrifysgol Glyndŵr. Ers iddi raddio, bu Karina’n byw ac yn gweithio fel arlunydd celf gain yn Eryri. Cafodd ei hethol i’r Royal Cambrian Academy yn 2018, a bu’n arddangos ei gwaith yn Oriel Martin Tinney ers 2013.
“Fy mwriad fel peintiwr ydy creu symudiad a chipio golau byrhoedlog o fewn fy narluniau. Gosodaf haenau didreiddiad ar weddillion tryloyw o fynegiant; drwy gyfrwng haenau o liw a gwaith brwsh a llinellau rhydd rwy’n gallu creu’r awyrgylch synhwyraidd rwy’n anelu ato. Rwy’n gweithio yn yr awyr agored ar y dechrau, gan ymateb i elfennau dros dro, ochr yn ochr â chadernid y ddaeareg. Yna, rwy’n datblygu fy syniadau a’m meddyliau yn y stiwdio, gan lunio darnau ar raddfa fwy drwy gyfrwng paent olew, pastel a siarcol.”
In January 2020 I was awarded a grant from the Arts Council of Wales, enabling me to explore a multi-plate printing process using carborundum. The work on display here, which includes both prints and paintings, is the result of my investigation into this exciting and expressive technique.
Carborundum is a fine silicon carbide grit which, when mixed with certain liquids, forms a paste. The paste is then applied to a cardboard plate, left to dry and then inked. Several cardboard plates prepared with carborundum can be used to create one print; each plate offering a different element of composition, tone or colour.
I also used the traditional etching process in conjunction with my carborundum plates. Etching into copper plate with ferric chloride, I was able to introduce fine line into my work, giving contrast to the loose tonal qualities produced by the carborundum.
My journey into working with carborundum has profoundly impacted upon my practice as an artist.

Yn ystod mis Ionawr 2020 rhoddodd Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru grant imi ar gyfer archwilio proses argraffu amlblatiau gan ddefnyddio carborundum. Mae’r gwaith sy’n cael ei arddangos yma, yn beintiadau a phrintiau, yn ganlyniad i’m harchwiliadau gan ddefnyddio’r dechneg gynhyrfus hon sy’n llawn mynegiant.
Graean silicon carbid mân iawn ydy carborundum sy’n ffurfio past pan gaiff ei gymysgu gyda hylifau penodol. Gosodir y past hwn ar blât cardfwrdd, ac yna’i adael i sychu cyn rhoi inc arno. Gellir defnyddio sawl plât cardfwrdd o’r math yma er mwyn llunio un print, gan fod pob plât yn ffurfio elfen wahanol yn y cyfansoddiad, tôn neu liw.
Bûm hefyd yn defnyddio’r broses ysgythru draddodiadol ar y cyd â’r platiau carborundum. Drwy ysgythru ar blatiau copr gyda fferrig clorid, roeddwn i’n gallu defnyddio llinellau main fel rhan o’r gwaith oedd yn wrthgyferbyniad i’r nodweddion tonyddol rydd a geir gan y carborundum.
Mae fy nulliau gwaith fel arlunydd wedi cael eu heffeithio’n sylweddol gan f’ymchwiliad i’r defnydd o garborundum.
