ELECTED IN 2015
John studied at Camberwell School of Art, Byam Shaw School of Drawing
and Painting and the Central School of Art & Design. In 1985 he
moved from London to North Wales, where he worked as a practicing
artist, as well as lecturing at Bangor University and Coleg
Llandrillo.
John’s recent paintings are interpretations based on the organic abstractions he sees in nature (tree growth and geology). Using oil paint and gold leaf, working on organically shaped pieces of local native wood (mainly wind falls) he builds up layers of colour emulating some of nature’s processes such as growth and timelessness.
He has also worked on a series of metal reliefs, looking at corrosion, erosion and process that have evolved from his geological etchings. John has researched techniques of Byzantine Icon painting and integrated some of these into his own practice. The arts council has supported this work.
