This oil painting masterclass will provide participants with advanced techniques and insights into oil painting in preparation for figurative painting, while aiming to deepen the participant’s understanding and enhancing their skills through hands-on practice and expert guidance.
Morning session:
Cast studies in oil, working on smaller studies in Grisaille (a monochrome painting in grey or other colours, often imitating sculpture or relief) and limited colour palette.
Afternoon session:
A longer study, working on a larger canvas or board with an expanded colour palette. Developing a full oil painting from a still life and cast sculpture.
What materials will you need?
- Oil Paints: cadmium red, alizarin crimson, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, raw umber, burnt umber and titanium white
- Oil painting medium of your choice (e.g. linseed oil and distilled turpentine 50/50)
- Oil thinner/odourless spirit
- Brushes: A selection of brushes in various sizes suitable for oil painting.
- 3 small primed boards, cardboard or canvas suitable for oil painting measuring approximately 10 x 12 inches
- 1 larger primed Board or canvas measuring approximately 26 x 22 inches
- Palette knife
- Palette
- Rags
- A couple of jam jars for thinner/used thinner.
- Apron or overalls to protect clothing
The artist will provide:
- Subjects matter for studies
- Objects for still life/cast painting
- Additional paints, brushes, odourless spirit, additional painting medium
- Additional boards/cards, jars, rags.
- Examples for demonstration
Easels will be provided by the gallery.
