I have an obsession with texture, particularly in rocks and geological structure, which I document on walks in North Wales and travels further afield. Using this information I make ceramics pieces which are sometimes spontaneous and at others carefully carved, attempting to capture the energy and power of geological form and describe the ordered structure of rock strata. Glazing the work is unconventional, using highly reactive and eruptive materials applied in multiple layers, often very thickly, creating rich textural surfaces. This process of glazing furthers the sense of geological quality and provides an element of chance.
I fire the pieces to around 1260’C in gas and electric kilns, varying the kiln atmosphere from oxidation to heavy reduction.
