Kim Atkinson and Noëlle Griffiths: Moss Garden

Kim Atkinson and Noëlle Griffiths present "Moss Garden," an evocative exhibition exploring the intricate beauty of Celtic Rainforests in North Wales and the Sub-Antarctic Forest of South Chile. The exhibition includes a series of folios, paintings, and prints that capture their experiences in nature over the past decade.

The collection features three main folios:

• Moss Garden: Depicts selected mosses and liverworts from Ceunant Llennyrch in Snowdonia, incorporating microscope paintings and seasonal observations.
• Hafod Woodland: Chronicles the transformation of woodland in Snowdonia over two years as it evolves into a diverse woodland pasture.
• Isla Navarino: Highlights their residency at the Cape Horn International Centre, Chile, showcasing the flora and fauna of this remote island through detailed paintings and drawings.

The exhibition is further enriched by collaborative pieces created at Treborth Botanic Garden. As Noëlle Griffiths describes, their journey began with a collaborative artist book inspired by David Bowie's "MOSS GARDEN," leading them to explore and document diverse landscapes and ecosystems.

Susan Gathercole: In Celebration of Ceramics

Susan Gathercole's exhibition, "In Celebration of Ceramics," is a heartfelt homage to the ceramic pieces from the Storiel and Bangor University collections. Her still-life paintings capture the essence of everyday household objects from the past, reflecting on their creators and users.

Gathercole's work is deeply personal, inspired by her childhood memories of pottery used by her grandparents. The exhibition features paintings on paper using gouache and hand-rolled pastels, each piece adorned with flowers from local hedgerows and gardens. Her distinctive "Wonky Still Life" style brings a charming and nostalgic perspective to these historical objects.

Born in Glasgow and having spent over 30 years near Llanberis, Gathercole’s art is influenced by her surroundings and personal history. She draws inspiration from artists like Mary Fedden, Winifred Nicholson, and Elizabeth Blackadder, as well as her artist sister, Gill Gathercole.

Both exhibitions offer a rich tapestry of artistic expression and cultural reflection, celebrating the natural world and historical artifacts through the eyes of these talented RCA members. Visitors are encouraged to experience these thought-provoking displays at Storiel Gallery until late September.
