The Royal Cambrian Academy (RCA) has long been fortunate to have had two outstanding figures at its helm: Jeremy Yates and Ann Lewis. Both have made tremendous contributions to the Academy, each bringing their unique vision and dedication to their roles. As we reflect on their years of service, it is impossible to overstate the profound impact they have had on the RCA and the wider Welsh art community.
Jeremy Yates has been an invaluable pillar of the Royal Cambrian Academy for many years, serving as President from 2014 to 2020 and more recently as Vice President until his retirement from that role in 2024. As an accomplished and widely recognised artist, his work regularly features in RCA exhibitions, particularly in our highly anticipated summer and winter shows. Jeremy’s distinctive paintings, often characterized by their atmospheric landscapes and attention to texture, consistently draw admiration. His solo exhibition in 2020, *"Lockdown Paintings,"* showcased his remarkable ability to capture the environment around him during the COVID-19 pandemic, offering a powerful perspective on isolation and place. His work has also been featured in prestigious exhibitions outside the RCA, including the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, where his pieces were displayed alongside those of renowned artists at the Mall Galleries in London.
Jeremy’s contributions extend far beyond his own artistic practice. Known for his calm, laid-back demeanour, he has mentored numerous volunteers and young artists, teaching them the intricacies of handling, hanging, and curating art. His patient and informative approach has made him a trusted guide during changeovers, ensuring that every exhibition is ready for its opening day. Whether behind the scenes or on the gallery floor, Jeremy’s presence has always been a steadying force, helping to shape the RCA’s exhibitions with precision and care.
What sets Jeremy apart is his unwavering dedication to the RCA. He has tirelessly given his time and energy to the Academy, despite these roles being entirely voluntary. His efforts reflect a deep commitment to the RCA and the wider Welsh art community, exemplifying his selflessness and passion for art. Over the years, he has been a reliable bedrock, offering his expertise and leadership whenever needed. His influence on the RCA, both artistically and administratively, has left an indelible mark that will be felt for years to come.
In
addition to his leadership roles, Jeremy remains an active RCA
member, continuing to contribute his extraordinary talent to our
exhibitions. His artwork, which has become a familiar highlight at
the Academy, reflects his deep connection to the Welsh landscape, and
his influence as an artist and mentor remains an inspiration to many.
We are incredibly grateful for all that Jeremy has done and look
forward to his continued involvement in our artistic community.
Ann Lewis’s tenure as President of the RCA was equally transformative. Serving as the Academy’s first female President, she brought a fresh vision and boundless enthusiasm to the role. Ann’s leadership has been defined by her commitment to modernizing the RCA, and her innovative approach has been instrumental in steering the gallery toward a new era. Her forward-thinking initiatives have breathed new life into the institution, most notably her pioneering work in establishing the Associate Members program, which has created new opportunities for emerging artists to engage with the RCA.
Under Ann’s guidance, the RCA underwent significant structural changes, ensuring that the Academy was well-positioned for the future. She played a key role in revamping the RCA’s staff structure and was instrumental in launching the gallery’s new website, which gave the institution a contemporary feel and improved access for artists and the public alike. Her vision for the Academy’s branding and online presence has left a lasting impression, modernizing the RCA while maintaining its core values.
Ann’s dedication to the Academy extends beyond her official duties. She has always been open to listening, whether to staff, members, or volunteers, offering her guidance with a calm and thoughtful approach. Her willingness to make herself available and to offer advice, no matter how busy she might be, speaks volumes about her character and her commitment to the RCA. Her time as President saw many positive changes, and her influence will continue to shape the Academy for years to come.
Ann has now stepped down from her role as President, but we are delighted to continue benefiting from her wisdom and experience as she resumes the role of Vice President. Her return to this position is warmly welcomed by all at the RCA, and we look forward to working with her in this new capacity.
As Jeremy Yates and Ann Lewis transition from their leadership roles, we reflect on the immeasurable impact they have had on the RCA. Both have given their time, energy, and vision to ensure the Academy’s success, and their contributions have left an enduring legacy. The RCA is deeply grateful for their years of service and dedication, and we look forward to continuing to work with them as valued members of our artistic community.
