On Monday 11 August, the then RCA Council served an official notice to RCA members that the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art, founded in 1881-2, and the RCA's premises in Crown Lane, Conwy, would close permanently on Sunday 24 August 2025.
Enquiries revealed that the form of liquidation being pursued was invalid.
The liquidation company withdrew, the RCA Council resigned. An official handover was then made to Dr Ceri Thomas and Jeremy Yates.
An RCA EGM on Tuesday 23 September 2025 will elect a new RCA Council and present to members an outline plan for the way forward.
This will include an art auction to raise vital funds and the recruitment of volunteers to assist with the running of The RCA Gallery when it reopens.
In the interim, the RCA Gallery is temporarily closed but we welcome donations and messages of support on our website and our social media platforms.
We thank everyone for their support to date. This includes prominent members of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art:
Shani Rhys James, Iwan Gwyn Parry, Mary Lloyd Jones and Gareth Griffith (2025 National Eisteddfod of Wales Fine Art Gold Medallist)
And others: respected figures in the Welsh art world such as art historian Peter Lord, Hon RCA, and music historian Dr Rhian Davies, the co-authors of 'The Art of Music: Branding the Welsh Nation' published by Parthian in 2022.
WELCOME TO THE ROYAL CAMBRIAN ACADEMY OF ART, THE HOME OF WELSH ART
Formed in 1881 and constituted in 1882 by Queen Victoria, we are a unique institution in Wales - an independent charity supporting Welsh art and artists, where art is encouraged, made, exhibited and debated.
We have over 100 artist members whose work is exhibited and sold at the gallery based in Conwy. We promote up and coming artists of quality, mount contemporary and historical exhibitions, and offer a lively programme of education and community workshops.
