Originally from Northamptonshire, Julie Davis moved to Wales in 2004 and completed a Master's Degree in Fine Art and Art History at Aberystwyth in 2010.
Since then Julie has exhibited in Wales, the wider UK - including the Royal Society for Women Artists and the Royal West of England Academy - and in Europe. She regularly undertakes commissions. Primarily using traditional oil painting techniques, Julie's work focusses on still life and portraits.
"I describe myself as a visual magpie: a collector of found things, fascinated by what stories our belongings tell, and how we (and sometimes other creatures) interact with our things.
A still life can be many things. A portrait or landscape in its own right; a metonym for the person that owned it or the land in which it was found. The juxtapositions of an assemblage can suggest agency and narrative, and I am often drawn to everyday objects which can be imbued with a sense of playfulness, nostalgia, or of longing: ‘hiraeth’, as we say in Wales."
