"Born in 1956, raised in Cheshire, I’ve no formal training but have drawn, painted and made things all my life, learning by practice and the example of others. From 1977 I designed record sleeves, posters and T shirts in London. Whilst making paintings and sculptures to use in the work I realised this was what I really wanted to do.
I moved to Montgomeryshire in 1990 with my wife Helen. My painting “Jack Tŷ Nant” won the open exhibition at MOMA Cymru. “Jack a Morley, Tŷ Nant” was visitors’ choice at the BP Portrait Awards (NPG, London). People wrote to me, moved by my paintings - an encouragement and a kind of validation. I received my first commissions. This is how I came to portraiture.
We live in a small, rural community in an area of quiet beauty. Our children were born and raised here. I feel this place is a part of me and I a part of it. We have made a life here and I have found the space and encouragement to be an artist."
