“My subject matter is varied but I am essentially a figurative painter who is always conscious of underlying abstract principles of composition. I sometimes allow abstraction to come to the fore though always starting from observation. My main media are oils, gouache and pastels. Recently I have been filling brown paper sketch books with black and white pen drawings (finished drawings rather than sketches). I take pride in being unpredictable and allow the qualities I enjoy in a particular subject to dictate the medium and style rather than imposing a regular formula.”
