Howard Coles, RCA (1935–2024)

Howard Coles was an acclaimed contemporary artist whose evocative landscape paintings captured the essence of the Welsh coast. Born in Cardiff, he studied at Cardiff College of Art in the 1950s before embarking on a career in art education, eventually serving as head of Art & Design at Hope University, Liverpool.

After relocating to North Wales, Howard’s work became increasingly influenced by the dramatic landscapes surrounding his studio on the Llyn Peninsula. His approach to painting was deeply rooted in observation and emotion, seeking not only to depict the natural world but to convey its atmosphere and energy. His innovative mixed-media techniques and dynamic mark-making challenged conventions, producing artworks that remain powerful and thought-provoking.

Elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy in 2001, Howard exhibited widely across the UK and internationally, with his work held in notable collections, including in Singapore and Malaysia. Howard passed away in December 2024. His legacy is one of exploration, passion, and a deep connection to the land and sea that defined his practice.

Keith Andrew, RCA (1947–2025)

Keith Andrew was a master of watercolour, renowned for his ability to capture the landscapes and heritage of Wales with remarkable sensitivity. His paintings, which reflect both technical brilliance and a deep emotional connection to the natural world, have been exhibited across Wales, London, and Europe. His work is held in esteemed collections, including the National Library of Wales and the Royal Cambrian Academy.

A member of the Academy since 1980 and Vice President of the RCA from 1993 to1995, Keith’s artistic journey was one of devotion to his craft and his homeland. His watercolours depicted the beauty of Wales with an unparalleled sense of atmosphere and light, each painting a reflection of his passion for the landscapes he so intimately understood.

Keith passed away on 13 January 2025, leaving behind a rich body of work that will continue to inspire and move audiences. His contribution to Welsh art is immeasurable, and his presence within the Academy will be deeply missed.
